Gregorio Galarrita Borja, assistant city prosecutor in Cagayan de Oro, died Thursday night (about 9:50 p.m., June 16, 2011) due to complications from bone cancer at the Capitol University Medical City, Cagayan de Oro City. He was 58.

A lawyer and a certified public accountant, Borja was known simply as Greg or Goyong to colleagues in the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA), and the Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) and to those close to him.

Greg was past president of COPC and had served the Club in various capacities.

Greg worked his way to finish college and law studies at Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan) as telex machine operator of the Office of Media Affairs ( a merger of the Department of Public Information and the National Media Production Center) which is now known as the Philippine Information Agency (PIA). Due to his interest and skill in writing, he later assumed as regional head of the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Also, he was the publisher of the Cagayan de Oro Bulletin, a weekly publication which was in circulation for about three years.

As a practicing lawyer, he was legal counsel to several daily and weekly newspapers, among them the Mindanao Goldstar Daily, Sunstar Cagayan de Oro and Golden Chronicle. He was also the legal counsel of several Cagayan de Oro-based journalists who were sued for libel and successfully handled them.

The COPC and the entire media community will miss him dearly and will remember Greg Borja as a humble, soft-spoken, simple and an unassuming person.

His remains lies at Greenhills Memorial Chapels at Toribio Chavez Street (fronting Xavier University Main Campus). Interment will be on Monday ( 8 a.m., June 20) at Greenhills Memorial Park, Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City.

He is survived by his spouse, Lucena, and four children, Louie, George, Gretel Lou, and Louis. [ Uriel C. Quilinguing]
