HON. VICENTE Y. EMANO
City Mayor
Cagayan de Oro City

Dear Mayor Emano,

Greetings!

First of all, we would like to commend the outstanding project that the Yuchengco Group of Companies is doing by renovating and restoring the monuments of our national hero, Jose P. Rizal around the country. This is an unparalleled and exceptional project for it promotes patriotic pride and love of our country.

Please know that we appreciate the kind offer to renovate entirely our 94 year old Rizal monument and park especially since the surroundings are shabby and badly needs repair. However, please know that one of our national heritage laws has defined our monuments as part of our cultural properties (PD 374 Sec.3a). Hence, it should be protected and preserved.

Research shows that our Rizal monument is one of the oldest in Mindanao and the first to be erected in Divisoria. It will mark its centennial anniversary in 2017. There is a marker in Spanish with the names of the monument’s donors,Porferio Chaves,an officer of the Liber Troop and veteran of the 1900-1901 Philippine American war and his wife, Fausta Vamenta. This is the oldest marker of the city and has a great historical value. Also, for decades, the monument is the center of Cagayan de Oro’s commemorative programs with patriotic themes.

No doubt, our Rizal monument is a prime heritage landmark of the city and should be preserved at all costs. In this regard, may we suggest that we discuss further the details of the improvements.

Thank you.

Very truly yours,
(signed by all)
