Now more Thai than ever

Cagayan de Oro’s first Thai restaurant has re-opened its doors to the loyal faithful and is now even more Thai than ever!

During the 23 October 2017 soft opening attended by friends in mainstream and social media, we were apprised on the reason for the renovation of the place simultaneously opened in 2013 with Centrio Mall and the revamp of its menu.

“Almost all of the other restaurants around the Centrio Garden were either new, or had undergone renovations and menu upgrades,” noted Jan Uy, who together with wife Maggie and Managing Partner Cathy L. Dano, put up the original place four years ago.

“So we thought it’s high time we freshen up the look of TMU Centrio as well as introduce a new menu to reward our patrons who’ve remained faithful to us through all these years,” Jan added.

The change is instantly recognizable even from the outside, with a brand new Thai Me Up Logo right over the door.

“In keeping with the Thai menu, we wanted to achieve an ambience similar to what you’d experience in a real Night Market in Thailand,” said Jan, who came up with the concept for the look of the original TMU Centrio in 2013, as well as the original TMU restaurant along Gen. N. Capistrano street and its subsequent transition to FilMeUp and now Cucina Higala.

“What we did was set up false fronts that look like the shops in a Night Market in Thailand, with some of them open, some closed, and still others ‘Under Renovation’,” explained Jan. “You will note we also have the gas lamps you find in a Night Market as our lighting, as well as the wooden tables and chairs. I believe we’ve attained a fairly similar look that will give TMU Centrio the unique ambience you’ll find in a real Thai Night Market.”

Of course, the be-all and end-all of all that is the new and expanded menu which Chef Cathy Dano describes as “More Thai than Ever.”

“You will recall the original TMU resto at Capistrano was basically a fusion of Filipino and Thai cuisines,” Chef Cathy noted. “However, for the new TMU Centrio, we’ve decided to bring in more authentic Thai Dishes to offer our patrons something new to look forward to.”

During the soft opening last Monday, my wife Gardy and I were treated to a dizzying array of one Thai dish after the other. Since both of us had already previously been to Bangkok, and specifically enjoyed dinner in a Thai Night Market, indeed the new TMU Centrio menu is as close to the real thing you can get here in Cagayan de Oro, as is the place to a real Thai Night Market.

Among the new items in the menu we tasted during the soft opening was Chicken with Chili Paste, Stir Fried Chicken Mushroom, Seafood Yellow Curry, Son-in-Law Eggs (!Don’t ask, just eat!), and Green Curry Rice. We especially like the Seafood Yellow Curry, but of course, that’s our personal palates talking!

Of course, TMU Centrio has kept the favorite menu items of its loyal clientele like Bagoong Rice, Tom Yum Soup, Spring Rolls, our personal favorites, Pomelo Salad,Pad Thai Noodles and the favorite of our bunso Jules, Mango Mambo!
