During World War II, US Navy submarines helped supply the Filipino and American guerrillas with arms, ammunitions and supplies, also ferrying personnel in and out of the islands. Known as the Spyron Operation, it supported the Filipino and American Guerrillas resistance to the Japanese occupation after the Philippines fell to the Japanese Imperial Forces in early 1942.

One of the few survivors of the Second World War in Mindanao has passed on. Virginia Hansen Holmes, known fondly to family and friends as Ginger, died on August 24, 2018 at her home in Falls Church, Virginia in the United States. She was 84.

Last June 19-22, I was finally able to visit one of the few regions in the Philippines I had previously not set foot in. Thanks to an invite from Summit Hotels and Resorts to cover the grand launch of Summit Hotel Tacloban last June 21st, I was finally able to visit the Eastern Visayas Region, more specifically the regional capital of Tacloban.

A turning point in the war in the Pacific during World War II is recalled today being the 76th anniversary of General Douglas MacArthur’s successful breakout from Corregidor through the Imperial Japanese Navy blockade. Riding four wooden Patrol Torpedo (PT Boats), the General successfully landed early morning on Friday, 13 March 1942 at Macabalan Pier, Cagayan and proceeded to the Del Monte airfield in Tankulan (present day Manolo Fortich), Bukidnon where he, his family and general staff took off for Australia aboard two rickety B-17 bombers on March 17, 1942.

Thirty six years ago, in February 1981 to be exact, I moved to Cagayan de Oro from my hometown of Zamboanga City to start anew. My first job was as the “official letter writer” of the then Ororama Superstore which had just opened its department store annex along Mortola Street. Last December 16, I was fortunate to be invited to share another milestone in its storied history with the grand opening of its new Annex Building along Mortola Street on Saturday, 16 December 2017.
