SMART marks Earth Day 2010 with Coastal Cleanup of Opol, Misamis Oriental

By Smart Communications, Inc. PR

Leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) held a series of environmental activities nationwide to celebrate Earth Day 2010.

In Misamis Oriental, SMART partnered with the PAF Tactical Operations Group, PNP Region 10 and the Opol Eagles Club to conduct a coastal cleanup in the Municipality of Opol.

In partnership with Earth Day Network Philippines, Inc. and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, SMART also sponsored the website
www.10mm.ph to generate support for the 10 Million Movement and enjoin the public to commit to an earth-friendly act.

The company also received the first Zero Basura Award for Business during the grand Earth Day celebration at the SM Mall of Asia.  The award was given in recognition of the company’s Post-Marketing Waste Management Program, which includes the recycling of billboard and advertising materials into tarpaulin bags.

SMART implements a number of programs as part of its environment advocacy program Kabalikat sa Kalikasan. These include tree planting and the use of renewable energy sources in powering cell sites.

For 2009 alone, the combined efforts of SMART employee-volunteers and community partners have already led to the planting of close to 350,000 seedlings and mangrove propagules in selected provinces across the country.

Over 100 cell sites nationwide are also powered by wind and/or solar energy under SMART’s Alternative Power for Cell Sites program.

SMART pro-environment initiatives are implemented through Kabalikat, the company’s corporate social responsibility and community service program.
